I am using a 9 x 13 baking pan for this recipe.
1. Melt marshmallows:

First, set aside one cup of marshmallows to be added to the mix later.
Microwave version: Add all the marshmallows except one cup and the butter to a large bowl with the butter. Heat on high power for one minute. Mix well, then heat at 30-second intervals, mixing in between, until the marshmallow mixture is completely melted.
Tip: Use a microwave-safe bowl.
Stovetop version: Melt the marshmallows (except one cup) and butter in a large pot over medium-low heat. Stir continuously until the marshmallows and butter are completely melted.
Mix the vanilla extract into the melted marshmallows and melted butter mixture.
2. Add Rice Cereal + Chocolate Chips

Add the rice cereal to the melted marshmallows and stir very well. Pour in the additional cup of marshmallows and stir. Let the mixture cool for several minutes, then add the chocolate chips.
3. Dump Into Pan

Dump the chocolate mixture into your pre-buttered baking dish. Use a spatula to smooth out the marshmallow treats, then sprinkle chocolate chips over the top of the treats.
Optional:
Recipe Tips
- Let the marshmallow cereal mixture cool for a few minutes before adding the chocolate chips. This will prevent the chocolate chips from melting.
- Stick the finished chocolate rice krispie treats into the fridge for 15-20 minutes to firm them up. This helps shape the bars a must-needed step if you are doing a bake sale.
- Grease your spatula with butter before stirring the marshmallow mixture to prevent sticking.
- Line your glass pan with wax paper to prevent the finished chocolate krispy treats from sticking.
Variations
Here are a few fun changes you can make to this easy recipe:
- Add butterscotch chips or peanut butter chips into the mix for a nutty, toothsome flavor
- Heat the butter first until it browns- brown butter lends a rich, caramel flavor to the treats
- Add cocoa powder or cocoa flavored cereal for a chocolate explosion!
- Sprinkle flaky sea salt on the treats for a gourmet taste.

How To Store
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to five days. To freeze, separate the bars with parchment or wax paper and wrap them in foil. Freeze for up to three months.
