These easy-to-make homemade chocolate truffles are simply divine! Quick and easy to make, these chocolate treats require only three ingredients.

Memories of decadent candies always flood my mind at Christmastime. And every year a silver bag filled with melt-in-your-mouth chocolate truffles would appear at Grandma’s like seasonal magic.

I well remember my mom and aunt enjoying these gourmet chocolates, and the kids did too. Chocolate is a family affair!

The truffles in this recipe are nearly identical to the melt in your mouth version we enjoyed in childhood. These magical treats consist of heavy whipping cream paired with sweet chocolate, then accented with bitter cocoa powder. Amazing!

Rich and decadent, whip these chocolates up for a holiday party or to satisfy your chocolate cravings.

About Truffles

Unless you are a chocolate connoisseur, you may wonder what a truffle is. French chefs created truffles in the 1800’s, naming them after the similar shaped mushroom.

They feature a soft inner chocolate ganache coated in cocoa powder, chopped nuts, or coconut flakes.

The traditional delicacies were often uneven in shape, so if yours are as well, just know you are in good company!

Key Tips For Making Chocolate Truffles

  • These chocolates are easy to make but they do take some time and will need up to 2 hours to chill in the fridge, so plan accordingly.
  • Rolling the chocolate balls can get a bit messy, wear gloves if desired.
  • I have made these with mini dark chocolate chips, instead of chopping chocolate (such a great time saving holiday hack!). They do take longer to firm up, though.
  • The type of chocolate and percentage of cocoa within WILL affect how long it takes the cocoa balls to become firm. For faster chilling times, use darker chocolate.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounce  semi-sweet or dark chocolate, finely chopped OR substitute dark mini chocolate chips (and skip the work of chopping!)
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • cocoa powder (find my favorite brand here)

How To Make Homemade Chocolate Truffles

This recipe is straightforward to make and fun to do with kids. (If you don’t mind a smear of chocolate here and there). First, we’ll make a gorgeous chocolate ganache- in the microwave!

Start by finely chopping your chocolate so that it melts more quickly.  Combine the 8 ounces of chocolate with 1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream.

Heat the whipping cream and chocolate at half-power in your microwave for approximately one minute. Add the salt and vanilla in this step if desired.

Use a rubber spatula to stir at the 30-second mark, then finish stirring at one minute. Stir until the mixture is completely melted, smooth, and glossy!

If you don’t want to use the microwave, heat up the whipping cream on the stove until just boiling, then add in the chocolate.

Set your chocolate mixture in the fridge for 1-3 hours, until the chocolate is firm enough to roll into balls without melting. (Timing depends on the type of chocolate used and temp of your fridge).

Sift cocoa powder and powdered sugar into a pie plate to prepare the topping. (If you don’t have a sifter, just mix well with a fork).  Skip the powdered sugar if desired.

Once the ganache is firm, scoop out generous teaspoonfuls of chocolate (see photos for reference). Then roll in cocoa powder (use gloves to skip the mess). Depending on size, you should have 24-28 truffles.

Roll the truffle balls through the cocoa powder to coat and set on a piece of wax or parchment paper, or simply leave in the cocoa powder. Put the chocolate balls back in the fridge for 30 minutes or until party time.

How To Store

The best way to store these delectable morsels is in an airtight container with the cocoa powder and put them in the fridge. Store up to one week.

The cold will keep them fresh until you want to indulge.

How To Serve

You can leave the truffles out for a few hours in a cool room – just be sure to pull them out of the fridge ten minutes before the party.

In warm temperatures, the truffles will begin to soften and melt.
