This delicious, three ingredient Paleo hot chocolate is a warm and nutrient dense drink you can enjoy guilt free!Jump to Recipe
It’s a snowy, blustery day outside. The kids are loving the milk and sweet mugs of cocoa you’ve made. Seasonal music is playing, and the world feels cozy and kind. You’d give anything for a steamy mug of hot cocoa, but you’re waistline is weary of sugar and full fat milk.
Does this sound familiar? Or am I the only mama who can no longer survive the wild insulin swing of traditional cookies and hot cocoa? 🙂
A Healthy Hot Chocolate Recipe
At my age, I try to milk everything I consume for the highest nutrients and most healthy ingredients. (Pun intended). I’ve struggled with adrenal fatigue, joint pain and weight issues in my 30’s, and have overhauled my diet in order to set myself up for better health in my next few decades!
Luckily, I’ve got an amazing, three ingredient cocoa recipe up my sleeve that will bless your woolly socks off.
This Paleo hot cocoa is also useful for those who are following the Trim Healthy Mama way of eating! It can be used as a delicious fuel pull, which is a meal or snack that relies on protein and has neither carbs or fats as a fuel source.

Why Paleo Hot Chocolate?
If you are a veteran of the Paleo diet, you know the benefits of primarily eating simple, nutrient dense foods. As I’ve aged a bit (ahem) I’ve noticed I am more sensitive to refined sugars, flour and additives. I have also noticed that a diet full of protein improves my mood and balances blood sugar levels.
Because of the stevia sweetness and protein factor, this drink nips my sugar cravings in the bud immediately!
What Is the Paleo Diet?
In a nutshell, the Paleo Diet takes us back to a basic, whole foods diet like our ancestors used to eat before processed foods were widely available. Foods in their original, untouched forms are emphasized. Meat, seafood, fruits, vegetables and nuts are staples of the Paleo Diet. These foods could be easily obtained through hunting and gathering.
The Paleo diet can help steer you away from toxic foods and lead you to eat a more nutrient dense, whole foods diet.
Now, this Paleo hot chocolate certainly wouldn’t be found by ancient man when hunting and gathering. But, that’s the beauty of living in 2021— we have a variety of ingredients available at the click of a button. 😉
This recipe still sticks to basic, clean ingredients, which makes it Paleo friendly.
I am not a strict Paleo diet follower, but anytime I can reduce ingredients and avoid refined carbohydrates and sugar, I do!
This Paleo Hot Chocolate Is a Perfect Treat:
- No Sugar

Simple Paleo Hot Chocolate Ingredients
This hot chocolate is so simple and easy with just three ingredients. You’ll need almond milk, organic cocoa powder, and chocolate collagen.
This recipe requires a milk alternative. I use almond milk because it is low in calories and carbs and also has a wonderful flavor (in my opinion!). I typically buy the Silk brand that has added vanilla.
This Paleo hot chocolate can also be made with sugar free coconut milk.
You’ll need a lovely cocoa powder, and not all are created equal. My favorite brand is Volupta Organic Fair Trade Cocoa Powder. We get the 32 oz bags from Costco and you can also order it here.
This healthy cocoa elixir really needs a quality hot cocoa powder.
I am obsessed with cocoa powder and it’s health benefits, which include decreased inflammation, improving mood, and even anti bacterial properties (read more here!). What can I say, I love it!
Vital Proteins Chocolate Collagen (The Secret Ingredient)
I have discovered a wonderful way to enjoy the benefits of healthy collagen: mix it in my hot cocoa! Vital Proteins Chocolate Collagen is so delicious when blended into this drink. I order mine from amazon and it usually lasts me about a month.
The mix is stevia sweetened and adds the right touch of indulgence to the drink. Wonderful news- stevia is Paleo friendly!
Collagen is full of protein, so this hot cocoa quickly becomes a healthy snack. Collagen helps with bone strength, skin elasticity, and can lessen joint pain! It’s also very filling because of the protein content.
You could also try Orgain Keto Collagen brand.
Collagen For Back Pain
I just have to take a moment to share that since I have been consistently adding collagen into my diet through the form of paleo hot cocoa and smoothies my chronic lower back pain has disappeared! This is amazing because I have struggled with back pain pretty constantly since I began having children 8 years ago. Studies have shown that collagen can help strengthen the spine, and it has apparently worked very well for mine!
You can create easily customize this delicious cocoa. Here are a few optional add ins:
- Sea Salt
- Peppermint Essential Oils
- Pumpkin Spices
Best Tips For Your Healthy Hot Chocolate
-I have found that mixing your cocoa and collagen very thoroughly helps keep the hot cocoa from clumping.
-Using high quality cocoa is key to this recipe. I have used cheap cocoa and the taste is just not the same!
-A little sea salt sprinkled in can accentuate the chocolate flavor for you fellow cocoa lovers.
-You can easily scale this recipe by doubling or tripling all ingredients to create servings.
-My kids love this hot cocoa, and I sometimes make it with regular whole milk for them.
