My husband is a first born American Laotian. As immigrants to the US, his parents kept many of their customs and traditions in place. I loved seeing a culture that was so different than the American one I had grown up with.
While intrigued, I can’t say that I embraced the food differences. Like many traditional cultures, most parts of the animal are either eaten or used in some way. Organ meats, such as blood, liver, or even brain, are embraced in many traditional cultures.
In modern day America, we eat things that would be considered bizarre and unusual to those who have consumed a traditional diet (twinkies or cheetohs anyone?). Many of our foods are not exactly found in nature, and actually pull nutrients from our bodies!
While I knew in my head that much of the modern Western diet was toxic, the thought of consuming organ meats did not delight me.

Being pregnant and nursing for 8 solid years tends to change you. The body, soul and mind are stretched to the limits! Becoming a mother forced me to take my health more seriously.
Over time I became aware of the lack of nutrition in our modern diets, and how this lack can cause major issues in the health of child bearing mamas.
My Own Health Issues Led Me to Seek A More Traditional Diet
Over the last few years my body started to show the wear and tear of bad nutrition and child bearing. Severe adrenal fatigue, eczema, anxiety and depression began to define my life. I wanted to be strong and healthy for my kids, but sadly, I was often too exhausted to even try to eat healthy!
I began reading books like Nourishing Traditions (buy it here) and learning how essential traditional foods really are. Rich in healthy fats, protein, and vegetables, these diets did not have any of the refined luxuries we eat today.

Why I Started Taking Ancestral Beef Liver Capsules During Pregnancy
During my fourth pregnancy, my exhaustion levels hit an all time high. My mood was also all over the place. I felt defeated, sluggish and unable to cope with life.
Just when I was supposed to be feeling wonderful and energetic in the second trimester, my energy levels completely tanked! I’d barely make it through homeschooling my other kids and then collapse in exhaustion on the couch.
I had never had this type of extreme exhaustion in the second trimester before.
I had my blood work run to see if anything unusual lurked. The only thing that came up was a low ferritin level. Ferritin is the protein that stores and releases iron when needed. Ferritin levels reflect how much iron is stored and readily available for use by the body. If your iron levels are normal but your ferritin is low, you are not considered anemic!
Unfortunately, there is MUCH confusion about ferritin levels. Conflicting views were given to me by my doctor, midwives, and a naturopath on whether or not my ferritin levels could be causing my severe lack of energy.
Doing my own research, I stumbled across multiple testimonies that claimed that low ferritin levels resulted in severe exhaustion and other iron deficiency symptoms.
While working in tandem with my midwives, I started exploring ways to naturally and effectively raise my iron levels.

I was desperate to find an answer to my low energy. While researching online, I found testimonies of beef liver capsules helping women who struggled with low ferriten levels and anemia. Are Ancestral Supplements Beef Liver Capsules Worth It (The Price)
These liver capsules are more expensive than other brands, but from my experience totally worth it for the quality. My energy and mood were boosted by the awesome nutrient profile in the capsules. Keep in mind that you do not have to take them every day to reap the benefits of liver capsules. As a food source, you could cycle them through your supplement schedule.
Can You Take Liver Capsules While Pregnant?
This is a controversial topic, like almost everything in pregnancy and birth! At one point, studies were done linking high Vitamin A consumption to birth defects in pregnant women. This has deterred women from consuming liver, because liver does contain a high level of Vitamin A. These studies were done on very high doses of synthetic vitamin A, however, NOT from food source consumption of vitamin A.

I took liver capsules daily from week 24 of pregnancy on. My sister also used liver capsules throughout her recent pregnancy. We both have healthy baby boys. Please do your own research and work with a health practitioner to make your own decision.
