Rich and buttery, these easy homemade sourdough bread croutons are the perfect topping for creamy soup and Caesar salads!

Okay, let’s face it… these oven-baked sourdough croutons make for a delicious snack, too.  (I have to hide them from my kids).

These golden brown croutons are the perfect way to use up left over or stale bread. The crumb pockets soak up the olive oil and butter they are baked in, and the Italian seasoning lends the perfect flavor.

Keep this recipe on hand- it’s quick and easy, and you’ll never throw away leftover sourdough bread again!

Just 4 Ingredients

ingredients for sourdough croutons: butter, italian seasoning, bread chunks and oil

You only need a few easy, simple ingredients for this recipe:

  • Stale sourdough bread (one day old is fine)
  • Olive oil or avocado oil
  • Salted butter
  • Italian seasoning

Notes:  If you don’t have salted butter, add 1/2 tsp salt to the recipe.

You can use any kind of sourdough bread for this recipe- store-bought or homemade!  My favorites to use are classic sourdough bread, herb infused bread, or whole wheat sourdough bread!

How To Make Homemade Sourdough Bread Croutons

  • Slice the leftover bread into 1/2 inch square chunks- you can go larger or smaller here! You’ll need six cups.
  • Melt the butter and add it to a large bowl.  Pour in the oil and seasoning and mix well.
  • Toss the bread chunks in to butter mixture, making sure to coat well.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place bread cubes on it in a single layer.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the edges are lightly brown.

Baking tips: For extra crunchy croutons, bake a little bit longer!

Storage

Make sure croutons have completely cooled before storing.  Store at room temperature in an airtight container for 5-7 days.

To freeze, spread the crouton on a baking sheet and place in the freezer.  Then transfer to a ziploc bag and freeze for up to 3 months.

Variations

  • Sprinkle parmesan cheese into the mix for cheesy croutons
  • Add garlic powder or onion powder for added depth and flavor

I never liked croutons because I’m no fan of large amounts of olive oil… it never even occurred to me to use butter! I can’t wait to try it!
