Why You’ll Love It
- I used the most basic, simple ingredients for this recipe. It’s quick but still tastes heavenly.
- This recipe has no added sugar: it’s a wholesome breakfast featuring simple ingredients
- This recipe is a great way to use up stale sourdough bread. You can use sandwich bread or an easy to make boule.
Ingredients
- 4-6 slices of homemade sourdough bread (I use this sandwich loaf recipe)
- 2 Large Eggs
- 2 Tsp Vanilla extract
- 1 Tsp Cinnamon (or to taste)
- 1/2 Cup Milk
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg (optional)
*Notes: Stale bread works great for French toast as it aggressively soaks up the milk mixture. I typically use bread that is only a day old, however. You can also use store-bought sourdough bread!
You can substitute plant-based milk like almond milk if need be.
Tools
- Cast iron pan or skillet
- Shallow bowl or dish (I use an 8×8 baking dish)
- Spatula
How To Make
Whisk the eggs, vanilla extract, milk, and cinnamon in a shallow baking dish. Make sure to whisk everything together until evenly blended.
Preheat a skillet to medium heat and grease with a small amount of butter or cooking oil.
Dip one side of the bread in the milk mixture, making sure it’s well coated. Then, flip it over and soak it on the other side.
Place the bread in the hot skillet or griddle, cooking for 2-3 minutes or until the egg mixture is cooked and the bread is golden and slightly crispy.
Flip the bread over and cook on the other side for an additional 2 minutes. Serve immediately with your favorite toppings!
Tips
- Try adding nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice for an upgraded french toast variation.
- Make sure the pan is hot before starting this recipe.
- For a decadent homemade French toast, substitute the milk with heavy cream!
- Make sure to cook the toast long enough so the eggs cook through, and the edges of the bread are golden brown
- For best results, make sure to use all of the vanilla! It really adds to the flavor.
- I like to use thick slices of bread for this recipe.
Serving Suggestions
Here are a few fun topping ideas to make this brunch recipe that much more special:
- Honey, peanut butter, and sliced bananas
- Homemade whipped cream and fresh fruit
- Butter, maple syrup and powdered sugar
- Nutella– need I say more!?
Storage
French toast is best eaten fresh, right after cooking. But if you have leftover slices, you can stack them in a single layer and store in an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to three days.
To freeze, first set the toast on a baking sheet and freeze. Then, transfer to a freezer-safe bag and freeze it for up to three months.
Try warming up the French toast in the toaster for added crunch.
Faq’s
Yes, you can use fresh bread for this recipe. Typically, old bread works better to absorb the custard mixture, but fresh bread will also work okay.
The trick to making this amazing recipe is to use the right level of heat- don’t turn the burner up too high or the toast will burn. Keep it at medium high heat. Make sure to be generous on the spices and vanilla extract for amazing flavor!
