Dyeing eggs with rice is a simple activity that even little kids can do. It is mess free and fun, and the little ones love to shake, shake, shake the eggs to coat them with dye!
When done correctly you will have eggs speckled in vibrant colors. Luckily, this is a very easy project–it’s hard to mess up!

Ingredients
- 12 hard boiled eggs: you can use white or brown eggs
- 32 oz rice: white or brown rice can you be used. You will need about 1/2 cup of rice per color (Dry rice, not cooked!)
- Food color: gel food coloring or liquid food dye works fine.

Supplies
You will need medium or large ziploc bags or plastic cups with lids. We ended up using large plastic bags; that is what we had in the kitchen at the time!
Tips
- For extra vibrant colors, add more food dye and shake the eggs longer.
- For easy peeling eggs use this method for perfect hard boiled eggs.
- Add different colors of dye to create your own unique look to each egg.
- You can use short grain or long grain rice for this project.
- Use a plastic cup with a lid instead of a bag if desired!

How To Dye Easter Eggs With Rice
Step 1: Hard boiled a dozen eggs. Let the eggs cool a bit before starting the project.
Step 2: Add 1/4-1/2 cup of dry rice to a medium or large plastic bag. Brown or white rice can be used.


Step 3: Add 6-10 drops of food coloring. You can use one color or combine multiple colors. I loved using red and yellow together. Close the ziploc bag and shake until the food dye has coated the rice.
Step 4: Add one hard boiled egg to the rice bag and shake, shake, shake until the egg is dotted with food dye. Set the eggs on a paper towel and let dry at room temperature.

How To Dye Easter Eggs With Rice
Equipment
- 3-5 Plastic Bags Small or Medium Sized
Ingredients
- 12 Hard Boiled Eggs
- 32 oz Bag Of Rice you will need 1/4-1/2 cup per bag
- Food Dye In Assorted Colors
Instructions
- Add 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of dry rice to each bag.
- Pour in 6-10 drops of food coloring in each bag. Feel free to mix and match to create your own colors and designs. Close the bags and shake until all of the dye coats the rice.
- Add one hard boiled egg to each bag, seal the bag, and shake it up!
- Set each egg on a paper towel to dry. Enjoy!
Notes
- The more dye you add to the rice, the bolder the colors.
- Wear gloves to prevent your hands becoming dyed.
- Any type of dry rice can be used: white, brown, or Jasmine.
